FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Spirent, Fraunhofer and LZE partnership ensures post-Brexit continuity of supply of PRS simulation tools.

Spirent’s RFCS architecture supports 3rd party development and supply of encryption elements. Technology leaders Fraunhofer IIS (Germany) will partner with Spirent to develop the tool with distribution from within the European Union from LZE GmbH (Germany).

LONDON, AUGUST 2, 2018 – Spirent Communications plc (LSE:SPT), Spirent have been actively exploring contingency strategies in the event that their UK based Positioning Technology Division is disallowed from continuing to engage with Galileo PRS related activities, once the UK leaves the European Union.

The strategy which Spirent have adopted is to build a partnership with the German partners Fraunhofer lIS and LZE GmbH that will ensure continuity of supply of Spirent’s PRS RFCS product extension.

Sales and order processing will be hosted by LZE GmbH of Erlangen, Germany, with Fraunhofer lIS taking on responsibility for the future fulfilment, development and support of PRS in the GSS9000. This partnership and strategy is technically made possible through Spirent’s RFCS system architecture providing a clear defined interface between the core RFCS (GSS9000) and SimPRS hardware and software components. This clear delineation ensures that both the RFCS and PRS simulation tools can be developed independently.

With endorsements from both the UK CPA and German CPA, together with key Spirent Galileo RFCS customers, Spirent and Fraunhofer IIS are pleased to announce that a legal framework is agreed between the two organisations.

That framework is currently allowing both parties to execute on a focussed technology transfer, training and quality assurance plan that will result in Fraunhofer IIS taking qualified technical ownership of the “SimPRS” product by the end of 2018.

The technical challenge and programmatic risks associated with this migration exercise are significantly offset by Spirent’s similar experience in working with a 3rd party US entity (RCI) to add GPS Modernized Navstar Security Algorithm (MNSA) support to the GSS9000.

Spirent, LZE and Fraunhofer IIS are confident that this approach will successfully deliver continuity of supply for Galileo PRS on the GSS9000 RFCS. Further information will be published on https://www.prsware.com.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is a recognized non-profit organization that takes its name from Joseph von Fraunhofer (1787–1826), the illustrious Munich researcher, inventor and entrepreneur. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. With 72 institutes throughout Germany as well as numerous international research centres and liaison offices in Europe, the USA and Asia, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has an established reputation for excellence at the front rank of applied research and development. All institutes perform contract research and development for industry and public authorities. The majority of more

than 25,500 staff is qualified scientists and engineers, who work with an annual research budget totaling more than 2.3 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS is one of the world’s leading application-oriented research institutions for microelectronic and IT system solutions and services. It ranks first among all Fraunhofer Institutes in size. With the creation of mp3 and the co-development of AAC, Fraunhofer IIS has reached worldwide recognition. In addition, the Fraunhofer IIS concentrates its positioning and navigation expertise in a single research unit in Nuremberg, where more than 140 engineers and computer scientists in five departments pool their wide-ranging expertise. The department Satellite Based Positioning Systems focuses on the development of receiver components and systems for satellite based localization using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS, i.e. GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou) as well as regional systems (i.e. SBAS/EGNOS, QZSS, IRNSS/NavIC).

A list of more than 20 reference projects linked to localization and navigation is listed on our website: http://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/en/ff/lok/proj.html

About LZE GmbH

The LZE GmbH is the commercial technology transfer office of the High-Performance Cluster for Electronics Systems (LZE).
